No more horses, joggers at Dungeness?

November 30th, 2012 - 5:44am

(Dungeness) -- Federal officials are taking comment on a plan that would shut down some uses at Dungeness Spit.

The plan from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service would ban jogging and riding horses on the spit as well as the upland trails nearby.

The ban is part of a draft Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the Dungeness Wildlife Refuge which includes the spit.

Officials who put the plan together say horseback riding and jogging were deemed a safety issue with other uses at the refuge. Walking would still be allowed.

Public comments on the draft are being taken on the plan through December 27th. A final decision is expected early next year on the document that is intended to guide use and development at the refuge for the next 15 years.
