Local police stepping up DUI patrols
December 7th, 2012 - 8:16am
(Port Angeles) -- Extra police will be out this weekend looking for impaired drivers.
It's part of a statewide effort under the "Target Zero" project that is putting the patrols out on the weekends during the holiday period.
Clallam County Target Zero coordinator Jim Borte says holiday parties often lead to more impaired drivers taking the road.
Extra patrols will be out from about 4 pm until morning beginning Friday night.
But now officers will have to keep an eye out for those driving under the influence of marijuana, now that recreational use of small amounts of pot is legal in Washington. Borte says officers have special field tests to determine drug use and the new law allows for blood tests to determine how much the intoxicating chemical in marijuana a person has in their system.
The state is funding the extra patrols through federal money.
Target Zero is an effort to eliminate all preventable traffic deaths in Washington state by the year 2030.
