Former PA police chief dies

January 4th, 2013 - 1:43pm

(Tumwater) -- Former Port Angeles police chief Mike Cleland has died from complications of a stroke.

The 71-year-old Cleland lived in Tumwater and headed the PA Police from June 1978 until March 1992.

Cleland and former Clallam County Sheriff Steve Kernes sparked efforts to establish the area's consolidated 9-1-1 dispatch center and the region's first drug task force.

Current PA Police Chief Terry Gallagher says Cleland was also responsible for bringing the Drug Abuse Resistance Education, better known as the DARE program to the city.
