Former mill stack set to come down
January 15th, 2013 - 6:17am
(Port Angeles) -- As demolition of the former Pen Ply mill continues at the Port Angeles waterfront, the days of the signature smokestack are numbered.
It's due to come down around the end of March.
Workers have put up scaffolding and are removing the silver paint from the stack -- which contains asbestos -- and must be taken off before the tower is taken down with explosives.
The Port of Port Angeles owns the property and has contracted with Rhine Demolition of Tacoma to level the buildings and the stack.
Yesterday, port commissioners were briefed on the demolition at the former mill site.
And now the Peninsula Daily News reports there are efforts in the community to keep the stack in place.
However, port staff say plans are still in place for the stack to come down.
