ONP seeks new wilderness management plan

January 28th, 2013 - 5:28am

(Port Angeles) -- Olympic National Park is putting together a new wilderness plan.

Park officials say the new plan aims to protect and manage the designated wilderness lands within the park.

Congress designated the wilderness area in 1988.

Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum says the management plan will be developed under the federal Wilderness Act of 1964 and analyzed through an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process.

The park is planning a series of eight public workshops beginning next month to gather input on what the plan should include.

The first workshop is February Fifth at Jefferson Elementary School in Port Angeles.

On February 7th, another workshop will be held at Sequim's Trinity United Methodist Church. Both workshops will run from 5-7 pm.

ONP will hold similar workshops at other communities surrounding the park.
