REGIONAL GIRLS HOOPS: Cedarcrest 49, Port Angeles 38

(Lynden) -- The Cedarcrest Red Wolves ended the season for the Port Angeles Lady Roughriders Friday night 49-38 in a 2A girls regional basketball game in the mammoth gym at Lynden High School.

Cedarcrest (22-3) is on the way to the Yakima Valley SunDome Thursday for the State 2A quarterfinal round.

Port Angeles finishes the season with a 17-6 record.

It was the final prep hoop appearance for PA seniors Mariah Frazier, Shayla Northern and Macy Walker.

The Red Wolves used a collapsing man-to-man defense to push the Port Angeles perimeter shooters several feet behind the 3-point arc, contributing to the Riders 21 turnovers in the contest.

The team from Duvall had a 14-6 lead after the first period.

The Roughriders stood their ground in the second frame, trailing 23-16 at intermission.

Port Angeles was comeback minded as triples by Macy Walker and Krista Johnson chopped the Cedarcrest advantage to 26-24 with 3:44 remaining in the third quarter.

Walker led the Riders with 11 and Johnson had 7.

A conventional 3-point play by Bailee Jones pulled the Riders within a point at 28-27 with a minute left in the period.

A two pointer by Susan Kinney, the game-high scorer with 21, left Cedarcrest ahead 30-27 at the third buzzer.

In the pivotal fourth quarter, Cedarcrest got treys from Kinney and Kalee Fowler to pull ahead 36-27.

Port Angeles never got closer than 6 the rest of the way as the Red Wolves' Kailyn Campbell hit key free throws down the stretch and finished with 14.

Cedarcrest outscored PA 19-11 in the final frame.

Madison Hinrichs paced the Riders with 10, while Sarah Stauffer chipped in 9 for the Red Wolves.

Friday regional girls scores include Burlington-Edison trampling Olympic 53-22, West Valley Spokane downed Ellensburg 36-19, W.F. West of Chehalis clipped Archbishop Murphy 47-43 and River Ridge dropped White River 43-35.

Other regional girls results saw Renton squeezing past Sumner 42-40, Wapato edged Grandview 61-60 and Mark Morris crushed Washington 73-33.

State pairings will be drawn Sunday at WIAA headquarters in Renton.
