(Port Angeles) -- It appears building activity may picking up slightly in Clallam County.
County deputy community development director Steve Gray tells KONP stats are starting to show a tick upward from the past few years.
He says in 2001 there were 87 building permits issued for single-family homes in the county. Last year, the number was 109. Gray says the numbers are trending higher for January and February this year compared to last year.
But he says although the trend for new building permits is on the rise, there is still a large discrepancy from when permits were at there highest in 2004. They topped out then at 403.
Meantime, Gray's department is reminding residents in the unincorporated areas of the county that there are a number of exemptions for building permits as homeowners begin their springtime building projects. The most common exemption utilized is for storage sheds less than 400 square feet in size. Other exemptions include remodeling projects such as cabinets, counter tops, flooring, plumbing projects, and certain roofing jobs.Of course building code requirements must still be met, and specific requirements can be found on the Department of Community Development web site.
