County faces uphill funding for future road projects

(Port Angeles) -- Federal funding for Clallam County road projects
may be more difficult to secure soon.
Clallam county commissioner Jim McEntire said this week the outlook is bleak as the feds tighten the transportation purse strings.
He says the federal and state governments will no longer fund the "upfront" costs of projects, mainly to make sure money is not sitting in budgets and is actually going to active projects.
McEntire says the county will have to pay for pay for all preliminary design work, and the other costs, before they can even apply for federal dollars for the project.
He says there's no guarantee the project will be funded after applying. McEntire says the county will have to look closely at what projects would be eligible for federal grants before embarking.
