Fire damages yacht in PA boatyard

April 1st, 2013 - 6:11pm

(Port Angeles) -- No damage estimate yet after a boat fire in a Port Angeles shipyard Monday.

The "La Rata Bastarda" is a 73-foot steel-hulled vessel built originally as a fishing boat, but has since been converted into a yacht.

Workers at Platypus Marine were conducting hot work operations in the forward area of the vessel when the fire was discovered and reported at 12:52 p.m. Monday.

Port Angeles firefighters responding in Engine 11 and Medic 11 reported heavy smoke showing from the area and requested a general alarm, bringing aid from Clallam Fire District 2.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported flames and smoke showing from a large vessel that was on shore in the boatyard.

Firefighters extended hoselines onto the boat and attempted an aggressive interior attack.

Conditions worsened and firefighters withdrew from the boat and extinguished the blaze from the exterior.

P-A Fire Chief Ken Dubuc says the blaze was stubborn and difficult to put out due to the many small spaces and voids involved.

The fire was contained to the forward section of the vessel, however there was significant smoke and water damage throughout.

In addition to District 2, P-A firefighters were assisted by Districts 3 and 4.

No injuries were reported.
