Sequim -- Sequim is one of 12 school districts across the state planning to apply to form charter schools.
They have until July 1st to complete their application and send it to the State Board of Education. If approved, Sequim could be among Washington's first charter schools.
The district's business director Brian Lewis tells Newsradio KONP the district has no firm plans for a charter school and for now, is keeping its options open by planning ahead.
He says by filing intent papers now, Sequim will still have the option of moving forward or not later.
Under the new charter law, a statewide panel also will be able to approve charters. The Washington Charter School Commission begins its work this week with a public meeting on Thursday in Olympia.
Voters in November approved an initiative that would bring charter schools to Washington. The first schools are expected to open in fall 2014.
