Stubborn PenPly stack topples in PA

April 8th, 2013 - 6:29pm

(Port Angeles) -- The giant smokestack at the old Peninsula Plywood mill toppled at 6:11 p.m. Monday after explosive charges initially failed to bring down the waterfront icon.

Demolition workers cut into the steel reinforcement bars at the base of the chimney to finish the job.

The stack fell to the north, causing a huge cloud of dust about 2-and-a-half hours after the scheduled 3:30 p.m. blast that was preceded by a ceremony with hundreds of onlookers.
