Clallam County upgrades emergency alerting program

(Port Angeles) -- The Clallam County Sheriff's Office has just upgraded its citizen emergency alert system.
The Sheriff's Office had been using the web based, "Nixle" system, that sent emergency information to citizens by, SMS texting, e-mail, or a voice recorded message.
But the new "Clallam County Alert System", allows authorities to alert residents more efficiently about crimes in progress, severe weather, fires, floods, hazardous road conditions, and toxic environmental conditions.
County emergency management program coordinator Penny Linterman says protecting citizens from dangerous situations demands a system that warns people quickly in emergencies.
She says the new system was used during a recent crime that involved a knife attack in alerting neighbors to the crime to be on the look out.
If you are currently within the County's 9-1-1 database with your land line telephone, you will automatically be subscribed into the new system.
"Nixle" users will continue to be sent alerts until they have been allowed adequate time to transition into the new system. To sign up for the new system, go to the Clallam County Sheriff's Office web page and click on the link to the "Clallam County Alert System". (www.clallam.net/Sheriff)
