County may forgive $225K loan to Forks pool

April 23rd, 2013 - 6:17am

(Port Angeles) -- Clallam County Commissioners are mulling over a request to forgive what's left of a 225-thousand dollar loan for the Forks pool.

Former Forks Mayor Nedra Reed chairs the park district that runs the facility. She and other members of the district pleaded with commissioners yesterday to forgive the loan or put off payments for ten years.

The community center was built with help from a county administered grant. But Reed said that didn't work out well, and now the center is being run by volunteers. Which brings up the reason for the debt forgiveness request.

But the county treasurer told the district the loan has to be repaid by the end of the month, or meet with commissioners to figure out why the loan shouldn't be immediately repaid. She also offered to take the owed money out of the districts' bond fund.

Reed says revenue from 2011 and 2012 did not cover the expenses, and the district had to use whatever funds they could find to cover their $11-thousand dollar per year insurance payment.

After the discussion, the Commissioners agreed on two options, and Administrator Jim Jones said he'll ask for some help in sorting it out.

Jones thinks he'll have an answer within two weeks, at which time he'll present it to the Board of Commissioners.
