Crews begin hauling sediment from Elwha

May 13th, 2013 - 5:55am

(Port Angeles) -- Crews will begin hauling sediment out of the area around a water treatment facility on the Elwha River today.

Crews are using the Milwaukee Grade access road to bring the material off site. The work is expected to continue through the summer.

Olympic National Park is cautioning users of the Olympic Discovery Trail in the area to watch out for trucks.

Removing sediment is one part of fixing problems with the treatment facility. Heavy sediment from removal of two dams on the river has damaged equipment in the facility. That has impacted the amount of water being processed at the facility for the city of Port Angeles and a fish hatchery nearby.
