Port of PA must move smokestack rubble from site due to dioxin levels

May 14th, 2013 - 6:51am

(Port Angeles) -- The remnants of the old PenPly smokestack can't be cleaned at the site.

Crews will have to cart it off, adding another 50-thousand dollars to the project.

The port and its contractor had planned to clean the debris at the site along Marine Drive.

But tests have come back showing too high levels of dioxin in the rubble.

The port will ship all the stack material, now classified as "solid waste", to Tacoma by truck, from where it will go by train to the Roosevelt Landfill, at a cost of $46,308-dollars.
