Unemployment rate improves locally in April

(Port Angeles) -- Unemployment rates dipped below 10 percent in Clallam County for the first time since the end of last year.

According to the state Employment Security Department data, the county had an unemployment rate of 9.2 percent in April.

That's down almost a full percentage point from March's 10.1 percent.

In April 2012, the unemployment rate locally was at 9.8 percent.

Clallam's unemployment rate has continued to tick above 10 percent since last December.

The data show about 250 more people were working in April compared with March. Hiring occurred in all categories of the private sector and government jobs. The overall labor force also shrank by 40 potential employees.

Jefferson County's unemployment rate dropped to 8.9 percent last month.

Statewide, unemployment is at seven percent.
