Visiting researcher rescued from Elwha

June 26th, 2013 - 5:51am

(Port Angeles) -- A visiting professor from Brigham Young University was rescued from his research duties along the Elwha River.

Firefighters and medics from Clallam County Fire District No. 2 rescued the 59-year-old man Monday afternoon along the banks of the river. Olympic National Park rangers also assisted.

The professor suffered an undisclosed medical problem and was hauled out on a wheeled litter about 4:30 Monday afternoon.

He was located about a half mile from the trailhead near Highway 101 and Olympic Hot Springs Road. Rescuers described the trail as steep and slippery in many places, making it a difficult rescue.

The professor was assisting a party of US Army Corps of Engineers in the study of the Elwha River.
