Thieves make off with PUD copper

July 3rd, 2013 - 6:02am

(Port Angeles) -- Metal thieves are busy in the Port Angeles area and the PUD is looking for your help to catch them. These metal thieves specialize in copper products and have zeroed in on the copper grounding rods that the PUD stores at their facilities and uses at their pole sites.

In an effort to deter copper thieves, PUD crews have been installing copper grounding wire with a steel core. The new wire is extremely difficult to cut and contains very little copper, so it has little value as scrap. These recent thefts however, involved rods that were solid copper. Within the past two weeks, the thefts have primarily occurred along Deer Park Road, at the Deer Park Substation and at the Agnew Substation. Anyone with information about these thefts is urged to contact the Clallam County Sheriff's Department.
