PA mayor heading to Tacoma for meeting on copter drills over city

(Port Angeles) -- Port Angeles mayor Cherie Kidd heads to Tacoma today.
She'll talk with leaders at Joint Base Lewis McChord about a late-night aerial training mission carried out last Thursday over Port Angeles.
The helicopters rattled the area for nearly an hour, scaring many local residents.
The Army has apologized for not informing local officials about the training mission.
But Kidd say the event "terrorized" local residents.
The Army says the helicopters involved included both twin-engine Chinooks and Blackhawk attack helicopters.
Clallam County sheriff Bill Benedict says his office was not told ahead of time of the mission.
He says the copters were from a special operations group and the exercise entailed them landing at the Port Angeles Coast Guard base.
The sheriff says the copters made multiple approaches for landings at Ediz Hook.
Benedict says dispatchers also received reports of the same helicopters flying in the Sequim area near River Road and up the Dungeness River.
