Bicycle burglar thwarted

July 22nd, 2013 - 5:45am

(Agnew) -- A resident interrupted a burglary Saturday afternoon between Sequim and Port Angeles along Highway 101. Clallam County sheriff's deputies say a family friend stopped in at the vacant house and found the garage door open. They also saw a mountain bike that didn't belong there. When entering the house, the friend heard noises and discovered a man putting items in a suitcase. The intruder fled on the bicycle. Police and a Coast Guard helicopter searched the area. The suspect, 35-year-old William Weems of Port Angeles, was later arrested after he was reportedly picked up in a vehicle.

Deputies say Weems admitted to being at the property but denied being inside.

Mostly tools and electronics were stolen. The estimated replacement cost of the items by the victim is over eight thousand dollars.
