Two deaths in Olympic National Park over weekend

July 22nd, 2013 - 5:47am

(Port Angeles) - A spokeswoman for Olympic National Park says a 28-year-old man died after a fall while climbing near Mount Olympus' summit on Saturday.

Spokeswoman Barb Maynes says Richard Grey Liston of Portland, Ore., was climbing with a companion near the summit on the east face of the mountain when he fell in to an area of rocks and glacier.

Other climbers in the area saw him fall. One of those climbers, a paramedic, reached the location where Liston had landed among rocks and glacier ice, and reported that he had died.

Using a helicopter, park officials were able to get the body off the mountain by about 8 p.m. Saturday.

In a separate incident Saturday evening ONP responded to a fatal heart attack victim who was fishing on a beach at Kalaloch. 53-year-old Philip Ramirez of Renton was pronounced dead at the scene.
