Tribal Journey canoe capsizes, nine in water

(Port Townsend) -- One of the tribal canoes trekking from Port Townsend to Sequim overturned this morning.

But crews were able to get the canoe righted and on its way to Sequim.

The Coast Guard was called out on reports of nine people in the waters about five miles north of Port Townsend.

`At approximately 7:30 this morning the Coast Guard was alerted to the capsizing.

The call to Jefferson County was reported to be from one of the people in the water. It is reported the person was calling from a cell phone.

A helicopter, cutter and small response boats from Port Angeles joined another small boat from Bellingham in the search.

Coast Guard officials say there have been no signs of distress located at this time.

The canoe was part of a group of about two dozen tribal canoes that landed at the Jamestown Beach north of Sequim.
