Pre-construction of new Lauridsen Boulevard bridge begins

August 1st, 2013 - 6:07am

(Port Angeles) -- Crews are making initial preparations to replace the Lauridsen Boulevard bridge in Port Angeles.

The prep work by Scarsella Construction this week includes the installation of sign posts along areas approaching the span.

Public Works and Utilities Director Glenn Cutler says the signs will eventually direct motorists to the proper detour route around the construction site.

Cutler also tells us some lane revisions will be made on Race Street near Lauridsen next week.

The city is replacing the aging bridge that was built in 1969 with a single-span concrete structure. Cutler says the city is in ongoing discussions with the contractor about the specific dates for construction work, but completion is expected sometime in early 2014.

The cold weather-dependent work includes placing of concrete, asphalt work and a final painting or sealing of the exposed concrete.

The new bridge will feature widened sidewalks, extension of bicycle lanes across the span and improving the Race/Lauridsen intersection to accommodate trucks, buses and other large vehicles.

The new span will look similar to the style of the new 8th Street bridges.
