August 15th, 2013 - 5:41am

(Port Angeles) -- The Clallam County fair opens today in Port Angeles. Today is Kids Day. Kids 12 and under get in for free until 6 pm. There will also be a number of special exhibits and events focused on the youngsters today.

A bevy of volunteers and staff have spent weeks getting the fairgrounds in shape for the big event, according to fair manager Shari Ioffrida. She says they've put in close to 5000 volunteer hours in August alone working on the fair.

Ioffrida says there are some new wrinkles for the fair this year, but as always plenty to see and hear with lots of exhibits and performances for the next four days. Among the highlights, the Black Vinyl All Stars bring a bevy of classic rock to the stage today.

A Tom Petty tribute band will highlight the musical entertainment Friday.

The fair gates open at 8:30 am. The buildings open at 10 am and the carnival will start up at noon.

This year the buildings and exhibits will close an hour earlier than in the past, at nine pm. The carnival will remain open past that hour. a href "http://www.clallamcountyfair.com" target newHere's a link to all the fair information./a
