September 19th, 2013 - 6:21am

(Port Angeles) The Port Angeles city council has approved a new contract with its firefighters.

This week the council voted 5-0 for the new labor-pact with its 21 union-represented firefighters. Under the agreement, firefighters get get a two percent pay increase this year and next year.

City officials say the new agreement is in line with the city's goals to contain costs and it had already budgeted the nearly 40-thousand dollar payroll increase in this year's budget.

Firefighters will also have to pay another two and half percent toward dependents' health benefits. The city is also nearly cutting in half the amount of a stipend issued to help cover out-of-pocket medical expenses.

The city is still trying to come to an agreement with the union representing its police officers.
