(Port Angeles) – Authorities say a 34-year-old Port Angeles man is in custody after a brief vehicle pursuit by sheriff's deputies Wednesday afternoon that ended with the crash of the suspect vehicle.
Clallam County Sheriff's Chief Criminal Deputy Ron Cameron says deputies were called to the Port Angeles Walmart when security there recognized a car in the parking lot which was associated with a shoplifter that happened the previous day.
The car left before deputies arrived and Deputy Matt Murphy caught up to the suspect vehicle as it turned off Highway onto Lewis Road at R Corner.
After a traffic stop attempt, the driver sped away.
Deputy Murphy initiated a pursuit, but felt it was too dangerous to continue high speed on a narrow roadway.
Moments later, he found the suspect vehicle had crashed into a power pole.
The driver had fled, a female passenger was already out of the car and a male passenger was just getting out of the vehicle.
A short time later, Sergeant Randy Pieper found the driver, identified as Christopher White, a short distance away near Heuhslein Rd.
White was arrested without incident on outstanding felony warrants and attempted eluding.
The passengers were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The male passenger was released, but the female was transported to the hospital.
The Washington State Patrol assisted by investigating the collision.
