County to purchase new patrol cars

November 13th, 2013 - 6:53am

(Port Angeles) New patrol cars are coming for the Clallam County sheriff's department.

County commissioners this week approved buying two new cars. But they won't be buying locally. Instead, the vehicles will be purchased from Columbia Ford, through the state contracting department.

Undersheriff Ron Peregrine says local dealers cannot compete successfully with the bulk volume discount prices offered through the state.

The county is using federal money to off set the cost of the new cars. Each car will cost about $55-thousand dollars for the vehicle. Another 23-thousand dollars in radios and gear also have to be added to each car.

Each new vehicle is mostly custom-made, so it may be early next year before they arrive in Port Angeles.
