Teen released from jail, ordered to appear in court for crash that injured two friends

(Port Angeles) -- A Sequim teen is due back in court next week to face possible charges in a car crash that seriously hurt two other teenagers.

18-year-old Elijah Sanford was released from jail yesterday and told to be back in court in a week. He may face formal DUI and vehicular assault charges at that time. Investigators believe alcohol, marijuana use and excessive speed all played a part in the crash.

They say Sanford was behind the wheel of a 1991 Volkswagen Golf that left Heuhslein Road east of Port Angeles about 1:30 Sunday morning. The car flipped multiple times and came to rest about a hundred yards off the road.

15-year-old Cailey Stipe was ejected from the car and suffered numerous broken bones and internal injuries. She was taken to Harborview 19-year-old Garrett Payton was also taken to Harborview suffering from broken bones.

Sanford suffered scrapes in the crash and was able to crawl out of the wreckage.
