2013 Apple Cup: Washington 27, WSU 17

November 29th, 2013 - 4:12pm

(Seattle) -- The Washington Huskies scored 17 points in the third quarter to make up for a lackluster first half, defeating the Washington State Cougars 27-17 Friday at Husky Stadium.

Husky quarterback Keith Price, who returned to the UW lineup after missing a game and a half with a shoulder injury, connected on 15 of his 20 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown with one interception.

Price also rushed 14 times for 23 yards and a score.

Husky running back Bishop Sankey broke the Washington single-season rushing record set by Corey Dillon (1,695 yds) in 1996 on a scoring run in the third quarter.

Sankey packed the football 34 times for 200 yards and a touchdown.

The Huskies improved to 8-4 overall and 5-4 in Pac-12 play.

The 106th meeting between Washington and Washington State was the first Apple Cup played in the revamped Husky Stadium, opening under overcast skies and a temperature of 49 degrees.

Price hit tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins for 34 yards and a first down at the WSU 39 in the opening march.

Cougars tackle Darryl Paulo sacked Price for a 6-yard loss on a 3rd and 5, forcing a 48-yard Field Goal by Travis Coons as Washington led 3-0 with 12:13 left in the opening quarter.

Late in the opening period, Justin Sagote recovered a fumble for the Cougars, setting up the visitors at the Husky 47.

Andrew Furney connected on a 49-yard Field Goal for Washington State, tying the score at 3-3 with 13:38 left in the first quarter.

WSU's Nolan Washington intercepted a Price pass at the Cougars 9 to quash a Huskies drive with 10:10 remaining until halftime.

The Cougars took the lead 10-3 with 4:25 left before intermission when Connor Halliday connected with Rickey Galvin on a 14-yard TD pass.

The 13-play, 91-yard scoring drive took 5 minutes and 45 seconds, with runs by Marcus Mason and Teondray Caldwell testing the edges of the Washington defense.

Mason had 54 yards on 22 carries.

WSU (6-6, 4-5 in Pac-12 play) rushed 16 times for 43 yards in the first half, coming into the contest averaging just 60 yards a game on the ground.

The Cougars dominated possession in the second quarter, running 29 plays to the Huskies 10.

As they have all season long, the Huskies scored on their first possession of the second half.

A 40-yard screen pass from Price to Bishop Sankey put the Huskies on the WSU 40.

On 3rd down and 7 from the WSU 19, Seferian-Jenkins maneuvered between two Cougar defenders in the end zone to catch a TD pass from Price, tying the game at 10.

Sankey found pay dirt on second effort from 7 yards out as Washington took the lead 17-10 with 5:16 left in the third frame, his 35th career touchdown.

A 3rd quarter barrage of 17 points continued for the Huskies when Travis Coons split the uprights with a 39-yard Field Goal with 1:03 left in the third, putting UW ahead 20-10.

Trying to slow Washington's momentum, the Cougars gambled on 4th and 3 from the UW 38, but Halliday's pass was deflected, turning the ball over to the Huskies with 13:26 remaining.

However, the Cougars closed within 20-17 with 7:30 to go after Halliday found Dom Williams in the left corner of the end zone on a fade route for a 5-yard TD.

The score capped a 10-play, 83-yard drive that took 3:26.

A Husky deflection caused a Halliday interception by Gregory Ducre that gave Washington possession at the WSU 37 with 5 and a half minutes left.

Price carried over right end on a 2-yard keeper with 2:08 remaining to put the game on ice for Washington, 27-17.

John Timu put the final nail into the Cougars coffin with another Halliday pick at the 1:45 mark.

Halliday completed 32 of 59 passes for 282 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

9 WSU receivers caught passes in the game.

Friday's attendance was 71,753.
