Rider girls, boys win hoop openers

The Port Angeles Roughrider girls took a 44-38 win on the home court against Archbishop-Murphy, while the Rider boys beat Forks on the road, 56-43 to start the hoop season.
GIRLS - PA broke away from a 9-9 first period tie to take a 24-14 halftime lead, but the Wildcats got om the boards in the third period and closed to 31-28 at the end of three.
Port Angeles put on more pressure in the final eight minutes, caused some turnovers. It was Murphy leading 32-32 and 34-32 before the Riders regained the lead and and held on.
The Riders were led by Maddie Hinrichs with 14, but Krista Johnson had 8 of her 10 in the last three minutes to secure the win. Megan Wall led the Wildcats with 19.
BOYS - The Rider boys led 9-2 at the first break, then just stayed ahead of the Spartans to get the win. It was 28-20 at the half and 42-32 at the end of three.
The Riders missed many shots near the hoop. Derek Schumacher led the Riders with 16, Hayden Gunderson added 10, Hunter Hathaway had 12. Leo Gonzales had 20 for the Spartans.
The Rider boys open league play at home Friday against Olympic, the Rider girls begin defense of their title at Olympic.
