Riders squeeze out hoop wins

The Port Angeles boys outlasted the Olympic Trojans in Port Angeles, while the Rider girls took a 50-45 win at Olympic in league opening basketball contests Friday.

BOYS - It was run and gun and in-your-face full court defense for both teams. Oly took an 18-9 first period lead and then the Riders roared back, closing to 33-31 at halftime.

PA outscored the visitors 21-14 in the third stanza, then held off the spirited Olympic rally in the last quarter.

Leading 71-60 with four minutes left, the Riders had to hold on as Olympic closed to 74-72 with 14 seconds left.

Olympic took a long corner 3-attempt that went long and Olympic knocked the loose ball out with 3 seconds left and the Riders inbounded for the win.

The Riders had four in twin figures led by Hunter Hathaway's 20. Hayden Gunderson had 19, Derek Schumacher 13, Brady Konopaski 12. Olympic was led by TJ Mosely with 20, 13 in the last period.

GIRLS - The Riders could not6 shake off Olympic, but managed to outscore the home team 32-27 in the second half to begin defense of their league crown. The Riders had only 8 eligible players for the game. Maddie Hinrichs had 20, Kylee Jeffers 10.

The Rider boys go to CK Tuesday, then host North Mason while the girls go to North Mason on Wednesday.
