December 13th, 2013 - 9:07pm
Port Angeles came out on fire against the Kingston Buccaneer girls, canning five triples in the opening minute to get an early 19-6 lead, but when the
Bucs switched from zone to man defense, it was all Kingston until the last minute.
PA led 22-12 at the quarter, then 26-21 at halftime. Kingston roared away in the third to take a 37-32 lead into the last period.
Trailing 42-37 and struggling to get good shots, it all came together for the Riders.
A pressure defense caused some turnovers, Maddie Boe hit a bucket, then, after a Kingston miss, Maddie Hinrichs nailed a three to tie the game.
Krysta Johnson, who had 12 in the first period, then hit a basket after a steal. Kingston got the ball to midcourt, but the Rider pressure forced an over-and-back and the Riders got the ball back.
With a minute left, Johnson drove to the hoop and was fouled, hitting two freebies with 46 seconds left.
Kingston got off a long shot, the Riders rebounded and ran out the clock.
Johnson had 19, Hinrichs 13 for the Riders. Napua Fontes had 13 for Kingston.
Port Angeles hosts WF West today at 5, then Klahowya Monday with a 3-0 league record.
