Fire burns part of Port Angeles mill
December 27th, 2013 - 5:24am
(Port Angeles) – Part of the Nippon Paper Plant in Port Angeles burned last night.
Port Angeles Fire Department crews were called to the mill just before nine pm. Firefighters quickly called a general alarm bringing extra help from Fire District Two.
Fire was extending along an exterior elevated wooden catwalk situated over several large liquid storage tanks and other mill equipment.
PA Fire Lieutenant Kelly Ziegler says firefighters extended hose lines up onto structures adjacent to the catwalk and attacked the fire from several different angles. He says access to the fire was difficult due to cramped conditions and the catwalk was approximately 50 feet off the ground.
The fire was contained to the wooden sections of the catwalk.
Crews stayed on the scene through the night.
An exact cause has not been determined, but mill personnel indicated the fire was likely caused by unusually high steam temperatures in the steam piping running adjacent to the wooden catwalk.
No one was injured.
