Port Angeles police to fund officer with federal money

(Port Angeles) – Thanks to a recent federal grant from the U.S. Justice Department's “COPS” program, the Port Angeles Police Department will be looking for a new police officer candidates.
The grant provides $125,000.00 toward the cost of an entry level police officer over a 3-year period. The city will have to pay about $119-thousand dollars toward the officer.
The grant requires PA police to hire a post 9/11 military veteran and to retain that veteran for a minimum of 12 months following the expiration of the grant period.
Police say they'll use the grant to fill a position that is expected to become open due to retirements, and there won't be an expansion of the force.
Earlier this month, the city council approved accepting the grant.
Candidate interviews will happen over the next two months.
Over the last four years, PA police have fully funded four officers and partially funded a fifth position through the COPS grant program.
Police say that's saved about a million dollars from the city's general fund.
