New Wild Olympics legislation submitted
January 17th, 2014 - 5:22am
(Washington DC) – Sixth District Congressman Derek Kilmer and Senator Patty Murray will introduce a new version of the Wild Olympics Act today.
It will designate tens of thousands of acres of land in Olympic National Forest as wilderness. It will also designate 19 rivers in the area as “wild and scenic”.
A similar piece of legislation was introduced in 2012 but did not get final approval.
But Kilmer says the new bill sets aside about a thousand fewer acres as wilderness. He says about 11 thousand acres of timberland were taken out of the proposal and replaced with about 75-hundred acres of old-growth forest.
There is also more than five thousand acres of potential wilderness included.
The new bill also would keep many Forest Service Roads open which would've been closed in the 2012 legislation.
It also removes the “willing seller” provision that could have paved the way for expansion of Olympic National Park in the future.
