New Clallam prosecutor sworn in Monday
January 27th, 2014 - 5:19am
(Port Angeles) – Clallam County “officially” gets an interim prosecutor today.
Will Payne will take the oath of office and take over as the county's top lawyer.
Payne was picked by Clallam County commissioners to fill the unexpired term of Deb Kelly, who stepped down at the end of the year.
Clallam County commissioners chose him over chief deputy prosecutor Mark Nichols. Nichols, who had been serving as the acting prosecutor for about a month, has resigned and will step down as soon as Payne is sworn in.
Also leaving this week is deputy prosecutor Brian Wendt. Nichols and Wendt were the county's attorneys tasked with civil duties.
Payne says he will assume those duties for now.
Nichols and Payne are both Republicans. Payne says he plans to run for the job this fall. Nichols says he is still considering it.
