City to get report tonight on smart-meter program

February 4th, 2014 - 5:21am

(Port Angeles) – The Port Angeles city council gets a report on the city's “smart meter” program tonight.

A consultant hired by the city to look at the performance of the city's previous contractor in charge of the program will present finding of a four-month study.

The city hired West Monroe Partners last October after becoming frustrated with the progress of the work being performed by Mueller Systems.

Mueller was hired almost four years ago to develop and install a system of electric and water meters that use newer technology and radio frequencies to communicate with the city. The city has already paid Mueller $1.9 million out of the $4.9 million budgeted for the contract.

But last month, the city declared Mueller had breached its contract by not meeting the contract guidlines. So far, only a small section of the city has had the new meters installed.

West Partners will look at whether the city can proceed with the current project, make significant changes or just continue with manual reading of meters.

The presentation will happen shortly after the start of the city council's meeting at six tonight at city hall.
