City of PA may require contractors use apprentices

(Port Angeles) – The city of Port Angeles could pass an ordinance requiring city contractors use apprentices.
The city council tonight will conduct a second reading of the proposed new city law.
Under the measure, companies that win city contracts worth more than a million dollars would have to fill at least fifteen percent of the labor hours with people in a state-approved apprenticeship program.
Proponents say the ordinance would encourage development of a skilled work force in the area and could provide local jobs.
Opponents argue it may be difficult to fill the apprenticeship hours locally and it could cause the cost of contracts to go up.
Several other cities and counties in the state have adopted similar programs.
