Port Angeles used a stout zone defense and converted 26 of 37 free throws to beat Franklin Pierce 54-28 to advance to the semi-finals of the West Central District tournament at Wilson High in Tacoma Wednesday.
PA will face Sumner at Curtis Friday at 6. Sumner beat Olympic 52-46. Both teams will play in the regionals the first weekend of March.
Port Angeles made only six of 28 two-point shots, connected on 5 of 16 long shots, but meshed free throws to keep Franklin Pierce at bay.
The Riders had many heroines:
Krysta Johnson hit four 3's in the first half, helping the team to a 13-8 first period lead and a 30-15 halftime edge.
Kylee Jeffers hit eight free throws in the second period and kept the team in the game as they had no field goals from short range. Jeffers also directed the team in the third period when guard Maddie Hinrichs picked up a 4th foul early.
Baylee Jones, Nizhoni Wheeler and Brittany Norberg denied any Cardinal inside shots, sweeping the boards and playing stout defense.
Hinrichs played the entire fourth period without fouling out and meshed five of eight free throws.
All Riders played in the game.
Now the Riders face Sumner, the SPSL 2A champion, winner to title game at PLU Saturday, loser to game for 3 and 4 to regional at Foss Saturday night at 8.
