PA approves agreement of state loan to fix collapsing bluff

(Port Angeles) – The Port Angeles city council this week quickly approved an agreement with the state to help pay for stabilizing a bluff at the site of the old city landfill.
The city is entering into an interagency agreement with the Department of Ecology for a four million dollar loan on the project. But the total cost to fix the bluff is pegged at about 20 million dollars.
The bluff at the site along west 18th Street has become exposed and there is now a risk of old garbage spilling into the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
To fix it, the city will first remove and relocate up to 265-thousand cubic yards of refuse from the eastern portion and move it further west.
The second part of the project includes modifications at the ends of an existing seawall to provide scour protection, and an adaptable transition between the seawall and the eroding bluff.
