Sequim man convicted of assault on PA officer

(Port Angeles) – A Sequim man has been convicted by a Clallam County jury of Assault Second Degree and Witness Tampering from an attempt to run down a Port Angeles Police Officer in May 2013.
36-year-old Jacob Backman faces a possible sentence of 10 years on March 18th.
According to court documents, Officer Bruce Fernie responded to a report of possible drug activity on East 2nd Street.
When Fernie approached a white truck driven by
36-year-old Jacob Backman and signaled the vehicle to stop, Backman quickly accelerated his vehicle causing Fernie to run, then push off the truck to avoid being run over.
Court records state Backman wrote a letter from jail to his female passenger telling her what to testify to, and that she should "remember" a statement different than what she told police, resulting in the Tampering charge.
Backman, has previous felony convictions for robbery, drugs, firearms, and malicious mischief.
