Sequim shelves new noise ordinance

March 11th, 2014 - 11:20am

(SEQUIM) A new noise ordinance failed to pass in Sequim Monday evening, when a vote by the City Council deadlocked on the issue. The ordinance was meant to adopt the standards already spelled out in the Washington Administrative Code, under the Department of Ecology. The city also voted down the current ordinance on noise, because it lacked specifics that makes enforcement nearly impossible.

At the next meeting, the backers of the ordinance hope that by including the specifics of the Washington Administative Code, it will pass as a new city ordinance. Ritchie said that the new ordinance will clarify specifics of the state law so local residents will be better informed.

Noise complaints are not common for Sequim, but city officials hope to have a specific plan in place that will allow for enforcement should a complaint occur.
