(PORT ANGELES) – The Port Angeles Fire Department had its busiest year ever last year.
Department fire personnel responded to 3,760 calls last year, which averages out to 10 calls for a 12-hour shift. In addition to the calls for service each firefighter answers, they must also fill the rest of their shift with a variety of duties. Port Angeles Fire Chief, Ken Dubuc says fire prevention plays an important role for the fire department. Fire Department personnel are often out at local businesses meeting with the owners as part of their duties.
With the high volume of calls the fire department has on a daily basis, Dubuc says people are often surprised to learn that fires are not the number one reason for a firefighter's response.
The Port Angeles Fire Department has 22 full-time firefighters with a volunteer contingent of 18 serving a population of just over 19 thousand. Of the firefighters on duty each shift, 2 are paramedics with the remaining firefighters cross trained as Emergency Medical Technicians.
