New Port Angeles bridge to open Monday

April 11th, 2014 - 5:37am

(PORT ANGELES)-- After weeks of delays and detours, the new Lauridsen Boulevard Bridge will finally reopen on Monday.

The detour on Race Street will remain up through the weekend as crews test the new traffic signals and put in the final sealants and handrails on the bridge.

Port Angeles city engineer, Mike Puntenny says they're targeting a re-opening of the bridge with a ribbon cutting at 10 Monday morning.

The original, 60-year-old ridge was closed last August. The 4.5 million dollar project to replace it was supposed to wrap up by the end of February, but weather and other contractor delays added weeks to the construction.

The new bridge has improved pedestrian walkways with widened sidewalks, extended bicycle lanes and improved turning lanes at the intersection to accommodate trucks, buses and RV's.
