Demolishing begins of old Sequim City Hall

April 15th, 2014 - 5:33am

(Sequim) With a swing of an excavator, Sequim's old city hall has started to come down.

Crews yesterday afternoon began the process of demolishing the old structure to make way for a new civic center. The new facility will combine city hall and the police station.

It's expected to take about a year to finish the project.

The city will spend about 15 million-dollars for the new facility. The 30-thousand square foot building will actually be located just east of the city's current city hall.

The project is being paid mostly through a bond sale earlier this year. The city also plans to use money from its utility fund. The bond will be paid back using a one-tenth of one percent increase in sales taxes approved by voters in Sequim in 2012 as well savings the city will get by shutting down various other properties it now rents for city offices and police.
