PORT ANGELES) – Olympic Medical Center is getting closer to an expanded emergency department at the Port Angeles hospital.
OMC commissioners last week authorized taking bids on the proposed project with the stipulation construction costs do not exceed $1.7-million dollars.
The project will expand the ER from 14 beds to 20 beds for a total estimated cost of $2.3 million when additional hospital equipment is included.
OMC chief nursing officer Lorraine Wall says one of the improvements in this ER expansion will be the hospital's ability to facilitate patients with mental health issues, and still remain flexible to handle other medical emergencies.
Wall also says the ER will have in its ability isolate and handle patients who have been subjected to chemical exposure.
The hospital expects to receive construction bids back and award a contract by the middle of next month. The project should be finished by the end of the year.
