Updated septic system codes start May 1st in Clallam County

(Port Angeles) – Starting next week, new rules for septic systems go into effect in Clallam County.
The updated code requires a septic system inspection at the time of any property transfer, expands the educational requirements of the licensed professionals who deal with these type of systems, and changes some of the avenues of enforcement for on site sewage system violations.
Sue Waldrip is with the county's Department of Health and Human Services.
"We clarified requirements that a septic inspection by a certified professional must be done at the time of a property sale and there must be an inspection on file within the past 12 months," said Sue Waldrip with county's health and human services department. "There are also new continuing education opportunities for septic system professionals to get and keep their certifications."
Waldrip says the new rules also allow for new stop work orders and gives the department the authority to "ticket" violators of the septic code rather than go through the prosecutor's office for violations.
A full version of the new code is available for review on the Clallam County web page at www.clallam.net, under county codes.
