(PORT ANGELES)-- A private company plans to open a detox center in a former Port Angeles nursing home.

American Behavioral Health Systems (ABHS) plans to open a chemical dependency, in-patient and detox facility at the old Port Angeles Care Center at 5th and Race streets, if the city approves a conditional use permit.

ABHS business manager Craig Phillips says he does not anticipate any problems in obtaining the conditional use permit, but will wait to see how the city proceeds.

The proposed facility hopes to open with 16 in-patient beds, accommodating them for up to a 30-day stay. In addition, another 16-beds would be available for a separate detoxification program.

The facility's management team hopes to target patients from the Olympic Peninsula who are currently being sent to other facilities in Tacoma and Kitsap for treatment.

Spokane based A-B-H-S says that 30 jobs would be created if the facility is given the green light to open.
