Man dead after shooting in Port Angeles

May 22nd, 2014 - 4:17pm

(Port Angeles) -- A Port Angeles man is dead after a shooting at an area residence early this morning.

A suspect is in custody at the County Jail.

Officials have identified the deceased as 25-year-old Matthew Baker of Port Angeles, who was shot at a home in the 15-hundred block of Monroe Road.

Clallam County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Jim Borte identified the suspect as 26-year-old Nathan Olson of Sequim.

Borte told Newsradio KONP this afternoon that a disturbance call was received about 12:40 this morning on Monroe Road.

Deputies found Baker dead on the floor of an apparent gunshot wound.

Authorities say a birthday party was being thrown at the residence and alcohol was present.

A press release says both Baker and Olson were attendees at the party and not residents of the home.

Officials say witnesses in a nearby room heard a single "pop" and found Baker on the floor and Olson sitting in the room where the shot was fired. A semiautomatic handgun was nearby.

Authorities say the witnesses claim they heard no arguing or discussion between the two men immediately prior to the shot being fired.

Borte says a first appearance for Olsen is expected tomorrow in Clallam County Superior Court.
