81 pound fish tops halibut derby

It took a 81-pound halibut to win the Port Angeles Halibut Derby Sunday and Tyril Spence of Port Angeles claimed top prize in the $20,000 cash event.

Spence hauled his huge halibut to the scale at 11:07 Sunday morning and the slab held up for the $5,000 first spot.

Second money of $2,500 went to Sequim's Randi Marie Owens, who boated a 61-pounder Saturday.Third money of $1,500 went to Jerry Grose of Port Orchard with a 59-pound fish.

It took a 36-pounder to make the 30-prize ladder.

There were 17 prize winners caught Sunday.

Port Angeles Salmon Club President Lee Hancock said the club's diectors will meet June 10th to review the derby, which drew only 560 entrants, and make plans for the 2015 event.
